The Block v Huset
Huset is the Danish version of the block. The Block is more highly competitive and melodramatic, while Huset is more focused on playing down with conflicts.
The differences are
- Sexual Orientation
The Danish version is focused on ‘casting the ordinary’, and there is a large variety of ages compared to the Australian one.
The 2016 version of the Block is the first series to feature a same sex couple and also the oldest couple.
Who watches the Block?
In August 2016, The Block had the highest ratings of all prime time shows, beating out new show ‘Australian Survivor’ on Channel Ten, and its first episode had a whopping 1,074 million viewers. It was also up against another new show, Zumbo’s Just Desserts, in the same time slot, but with the Block already an established series, it clearly won over its newest rivals.
The first day of the Block is always filled with lots of drama, scandal and emotion. The show mainly focuses of regular Australian couples, who have to renovate apartments from scratch. The Block places emphasis on competition between the different competing couples, and also the big decision on who gets a certain apartment.
The Block envisages as a soap opera dealing with the human drama that arises during the renovations work. In the Danish version TV2 viewers were opposed to a harder conflict and ridden approach, and the playing down of conflict really shows in the channels competition, and it doesn’t want to look like the latter. The Australian version of the show involves contestants and their personal lives, but the same cannot be said about Huset, because there is no cliffhanger or dramatic finish, giving you a sneak peek of what is going to happen in the next part of the show.
Huset isn’t as popular in Denmark, as the Block is in Australia, because year after year the Block keeps topping the TV ratings, and while it is doing that the show will keep going for many years to come.
Just a few years ago, the host of the Block, Scott Cam won a Gold Logie for his popularity associated with the show.
These sorts of shows, have their fans, as do many other shows like it. A lot of people are against Reality TV, and it has a lot of people asking questions such as, “Is Reality TV the best form of entertainment?”
I believe some of the Reality shows are quite good, while others is like watching grass grow, but as with everything, you can’t please everybody, and keep them all happy.
