Career Aspiration:  Sports Reporter in Winter Sports, Soccer or Athletics          Name: Birthe Skingen       Age: 20 Lives: Wollongong (Originally from Norway) Degree: Bachelor of Journalism

For my original interviews, I decided to go with sports journalism, (because that’s what I want to get into), and I caught up with 4 UOW Students, Birthe Skingen, Ryan Geer, Olivia Barry & Jake Bull to talk about their career aspirations.

Birthe’s dream is to get involved in Winter Olympics, Winter Sports, Athletics and Football (Soccer). Ryan’s aspiration is to be a writer, presenter or analyst in AFL, Cricket or the NBA, Olivia aims to be the first woman to hold a permanent position at Tracks Magazine (Surfing), and Jake wants to be someone who makes a difference, and he believes voicing your opinion is a big responsibility.

Birthe looks Norwegian sports reporter, Karen-Marie Ellefsen, Ryan looks up to AFL Experts Mark Robinson and Damien Barrett, Olivia doesn’t have one and Jake actually has 2, Simon Hill for soccer, and Triple M’s Dan Ginnane, who calls NRL games.

Jake probably will benefit the most out of all of the 4, because he already has so much experience, he works closely with the St George Illawarra Dragons media department, Illawarra Cutters & Illawarra Steelers media intern, and writer for the 2015 Asian Cup and the NSW National Premier League. He is also part of the UOWTV podcast, the 4 pointers, which has helped him in editing and promoting, and this can only mean good things for his aspirations in the future, and maybe some employment in sports journalism down the track.

There are also some issues that may affect our path to what we aspire to get in sports journalism. Olivia thinks that people assume that sports journalists are inarticulate and less of a journalist than those in political journalism. Jake beleives that people see sports journalism as a soft news medium. Large parts of the industry has former players involved, which makes the chances of getting a job a lot less. Birthe agrees that most sports hire former players and legends of the certain sport, for example in the NRL, Peter Sterling and Darren Lockyer.

Finally I asked them their plan and where they hope to be in the next 5 years, and this is what they all had to say

Birthe will have just completed her Masters Degree, and she is determined to.

Ryan hopes to have finished his Degree, he hopes to start working for a newspaper, either writing, just about sport in general.
Olivia: Hopefully finished with my Degree, and I see myself working as an intern, hopefully at Tracks, or any other surf magazine

Jake hopes to be a fully fledged sports journalist by then, he would like to be calling NRL games on Triple M or being a radio presenter.
